Decodable Book: Bob Books Sight Words: Kindergarten

Title: Bob Books Sight Words: Kindergarten
Author: Lynn Maslen Kertell
Publisher:  Scholastic, Inc.
Publication Date: July 1, 2010
ISBN: 978-0545019231

This is a good book for beginner readers such as kindergarteners.  They came in a bundle so I was able to get to a few of them as they are also short in length.  As compared to other children's books the illustrations aren't as appealing but are literal.  The character names and activities they do are small in size making it easier for beginner readers to get through pronunciation with ease. Additionally, the use of sight words is the common thread as these books are meant to encourage rather than confuse or frustrate younger readers.  It is a great way for newer reads to gain confidence while feeling accomplished.

Wordless Picture Book 2: Flashlight

Title: Flashlight
Author: Lizi Boyd
Publisher: Chronicle Books
Publication Date: August 12, 2014
ISBN: 9781452118949

This was a fun book that immediately screamed out bed time for me for obvious reasons (the flashlight).   You see the little boy navigate his way through what appears to be his backyard and maybe into the woods. Since the flashlight is only unveiling partial pictures you are left to use your context clues to piece together a story.  This does require a big imagination but who's got a bigger imagination than a 5-7 year old?!

Wordless Picture Book 1: Another

Title: Another
Author: Christian Robinson
Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: March 5, 2019
ISBN: 978-1534421677

This was a very great book that peaks and taps into the imagination.  Since there are no words you have to come up with a story of your own to what the little girl and her cat are doing on each page.  The colors are vibrant which would captivate a young reader or non-reader. This made me think of my own children because since they are not reading yet they make up stories based on the pictures that they see in regular books so this would also be a great book for younger children who aren't reading yet.

Board Book: Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book

Title: Scholastic Discover More Reader Level 2: Fantastic Frogs
Author: Rod Campbell
Publisher: Little Simon
Publication Date: May 8, 2007
ISBN: 9781416947370

This was a great interactive book with flap pictures on every page.  I read this with my boys (ages 4 & 2) and they took delight in finding the different animals under every flap.  After about 3 or 4 pages, they caught onto the fact that the animals were not going to be ones that people keep in their homes. Very cute and engaging read.

Grocery Store Book: Scholastic Discover More Reader Level 2: Fantastic Frogs

Title: Scholastic Discover More Reader Level 2: Fantastic Frogs
Author: Penelope Arlon, Tori Kasara

Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.

Publication Date: November 26, 2013

ISBN: 9780545572712

This was an interesting read for reptile fanatics, specifically the ones who love frogs.  This book is filled with vibrant pictures and is loaded with facts about frogs that I would have never known otherwise.  The format is great for children because the sentences are short and concise. Since I am not really into science, this was not very entertaining to me but the content of the book was really interesting.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Kerese Reyes and I am a Human Resource Management here at DeSales and as a mother of 2 with a third on the way I thought this was a great course to take to fulfill one of my required electives.  Reading is absolutely necessary and fun but in this day and age of technology it has sort of become a lost pastime. I'll be blogging for the next 3 weeks about my learnings and findings as I explore this course!
